AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Learn more about Autism and how physiotherapy can help improve function & motor skills.

WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (shortened to ASD) is a disability that is characterised by social communication difficulties and restrictive, repetitive behaviours.

ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, this means that the brain of someone with Autism develops and functions differently to a typical brain.

There is no single cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, genetics appear to play a major role in the condition.

35% of children with Autism will have a sibling with the disorder as well. Recent studies have shown that parents of ASD children tend to have a high number of autistic traits themselves.

Autism Spectrum Disorder cannot be cured. It is a difference in brain function, not a disease.

Treatment is focused on building skills and strategies to assist people with ASD in their daily life. Every individual with ASD will have unique challenges that their diagnosis presents. Treatment often includes occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology and physiotherapy.

Repetitive Behaviours

Arm flapping, rocking and spinning movements, fixation on certain objects or interests, lining up toys, insistence on routine, tiptoe walking.

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER TREATMENT

Treatments for ASD are constantly emerging and being researched. Based on current evidence, we will discuss current medications, therapies and altherative medicines used in the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

There are no approved medications in Australia to treat ASD. However, medications may be used to treat secondary conditions or behaviours of concern. Examples include medications to treat sleeping disorders, ADHD, anxiety and depression. These are all conditions that are closely linked to ASD.

Therapies for Autism can include health professionals such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and psychology.

In Australia, Autism Spectrum Disorder can be diagnosed by a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist. Sometimes a team of health professionals (pyschologist, occupational therapist ect.) is needed to ensure that the diagnosis is correct.

Autism is a lifelong condition, so ideally therapies begin from an early age with the goal to maximise a child’s development, function and life skills. This helps to reduce burden on family, carers and health services.

These therapies may include:
  • Physiotherapy – To improve gross motor skills such as movement, strength, balance and function
  • Occupational Therapy – To assist with sensory integration and fine motor skills
  • Speech Therapy – To address communication and social difficulties
  • Psychology – To improve behaviours and develop healthy coping strategies
