MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Learn more about Multiple Sclerosis and how your physiotherapist can help you move and feel better.

WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?

Multiple Sclerosis (shortened to MS) is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the protective coating around the nerves of the body.

This protective coating, called the myelin sheath, becomes damaged and affects signals from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body.

MS is a progressive disease, meaning that damage to the myelin sheath worsens over time.

The cause of MS is still unclear. Current research indicates that MS may be triggered by a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors.

About 90% of people with MS have been infected by the Epstein Barr Virus (the virus that causes Glandular Fever) and this virus can be found in MS lesions on the brain and spinal cord.

Multiple Sclerosis is a relatively common disability, roughly affecting 1 in every 1000 Australians. The prevalence of MS is on the rise, this has been attributed to improved diagnosis and increased rates of the disease.

There is currently no cure for MS. Therefore, treatment involves minimising the symptoms of the condition and limiting damage to the myelin sheath.

This is done through a combination of medications and therapies. Physiotherapy is often part of this treatment approach.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MS

NDIS physiotherapy for Multiple Sclerosis MS

Cognitive

Muscle weakness, spasms and stiffness, changes to balance, increased falls, tremor, difficulty walking and increased need for assistive equipment.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS TREATMENT

Treatments for MS are separated into pharmacological (medications) and non-pharmacological approaches. Non-pharmacological approaches can include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and psychology.

Firstly, medication can vary widely between individuals with MS. This is because of the complex and varied nature of the disease.

In Australia, most individuals with MS will be diagnosed and treated by a Neurologist, a medical doctor who specialises in conditions of the brain, nerves and spinal cord.

Medications prescribed for MS fall into three main categories:

  • Immunotherapies – These medications reduce the activity of the immune system. This is believed to slow the severity and frequency of attacks on the myelin sheath. Examples include: Tysabri and Betaferon.
  • Corticosteroid medication – Aimed and reducing the level of inflammation during the acute relapse and therefore reducing level of symptoms. Examples include: Methylprednisolone.
  • Medications to help with the secondary effects of MS such as muscle spasticity, anxiety and pain. Examples include: Botox injections and anti-depressants.

Your doctor may recommend other therapies including:
  • Physiotherapy – To maintain and improve movement, strength, balance and function
  • Occupational Therapy – To assist with environmental modifications (such as a ramp at home) and prescribe assistive equipment
  • Speech Therapy – To address communication difficulties and treat facial muscle weakness
  • Psychology – To assist with primary or secondary cognitive impairments and emotional difficulties

PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR MS

Physiotherapy is effective in reducing MS symptoms and to maximise strength and function.

Every individual is unique, therefore a specifically tailored management program is required for each person to reach their full potential.

At Homemade Physiotherapy, we will provide a specifically designed program that best suites you. We can help to maximise your:

  • Muscular strength
  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Balance and falls risk
  • Muscle stiffness and tightness
  • Reduce painful symptoms
  • Improve blood flow and circulation

If you are unable to leave your house, we are able to come to you and provide the appropriate treatment for the environment that you are living in.

Hydrotherapy is another popular option of MS clients. Water-based therapy is ideal for clients with limited mobility, providing a safe environment in the pool. The warm water can also provide improved blood flow, greater movement and reduced pain.

Our approach is designed around the best evidence alongside your own personal goals. Through both hands-on therapy, education and exercise, the physical management of your MS is in safe hands with us.
