SPINAL CORD INJURY

Learn more about Spinal Cord Injury and how physiotherapy can help improve function & maximise strength.

UNDERSTANDING SPINAL CORD INJURY

Spinal Cord Injury (or SCI) is a serious medical condition where the nerves of the spinal cord are damaged, resulting in permanent disability.

SCI is often caused by a traumatic injury, such as a car accident, fall or workplace incident. Typically, a vertebrae in the spine will compress or sever the spinal cord. This causes the neurological symptoms of Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal Cord Injuries are classified based on extent of damage (partial or complete) and level of the spine involved. Generally, the higher the injury in the spinal cord – the more serious the symptoms.

Treatment involves early and intensive rehabilitation with physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and occupational therapy. In more recent times, robotics and technology has played an emerging role in rehabilitation.
